Easy Homemade Macaroni and Cheese Recipes: Stove-top and Baked

Macaroni and cheese (also known as Mac n’ cheese) is comfort food for all seasons. A very quick and easy to make side or main dish that does not break the bank. These easy homemade macaroni and cheese recipes are sure to please. They are tasty, cheesy, creamy and filled with spicy goodness. Serve with some delicious chicken breasts and veggies for the best dinner ever!

Stove-top Mac n’ cheese


  • 1 Box elbow macaroni
  • ¼ cup  unsalted butter
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ tsp salt
  • Ground black pepper to taste
  • 2 cups milk (preferably whole milk)
  • 2-3 cups shredded cheddar cheese


  • Boil your pasta according to packet instructions or in a pot of boiling salted water until almost al dente. (add a few tablespoons of oil to water to prevent sticking). Drain and rinse pasta when ready.
  • In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat, add the flour, salt and pepper and stir for about a minute or until flour dissolves completely.
  • Slowly pour in the milk, stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Stir until the milk is bubbling and thick for about 5 minutes. Take care not to burn the milk or flour as this would affect the flavour.
  • Add the cheddar to the milk sauce and stir until cheese completely melts, fold in pasta and stir until it is properly coated. Remove from heat and serve warm.
  • Garnish with grated parmesan and fresh basil leaves.

 Baked Homemade Mac n’ Cheese


  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 can evaporated milk
  • ½ cup half and a half (half cream and half milk)
  • 1 tbsp onion powder
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp creole seasoning
  • ¼ tsp cayenne
  • ½ cup grated mozzarella
  • ½ cup grated cheddar
  • Salt and ground black pepper to taste
  • ½ cup jack/ parmesan cheese
  • Salt and ground black pepper to taste
  • 226g uncooked elbow macaroni


  • Cook pasta according to packet instructions until slightly al dente, drain and rinse.
  • Melt butter in a pan over medium heat, add in flour. Cook the flour, whisking until flour combines completely with butter. Cook for about a minute more.
  • Slowly add in the milk, whisking after each addition. Follow with the half and half, still whisking. Stir and let simmer until sauce thickens for about 3-5 minutes.
  • Season with the onion and garlic powders, creole seasoning, cayenne pepper, salt and black pepper. Stir and let it simmer for about two more minutes.
  • At this point, add in the cheeses, reserve some for later. Stir until cheese is melted, evenly combined and smooth.
  • Fold in pasta and stir to coat evenly. Transfer the mixture to a lightly greased baking dish, top with reserved cheese. Bake at 375F for 20 minutes or until the top is golden and bubbly.
  • Serve warm and enjoy.
